How is the motif applied to the shoes and saddle, is it the same or a different process?

The Swift motif on the saddle and the sneakers are applied slightly different. The saddle motif is applied with a moulded emboss plate, which is a very unique process. For the sneakers, we chose to utilize laser etching to maintain the detailed design work and craftsmanship.

Do you work alone or with a team of designers?

At Vans we consider our team to be a family and are constantly gaining inspiration from one another. However, since our Vault by Vans collections are very specific, I generally spearhead a project and work closely with our collaborator.

Dean Edmonds for Kinoko!


The output of English designer-maker Dean Edmonds sits somewhere between minimalist and mid-century, playful and utilitarian. While planning the interior of our brick and mortar shop earlier this year we had the opportunity to work with him on a couple of projects, and inject some of his trademark aesthetic into the space.
Growing up, Edmonds spent lots of time in the workshop of his father (a steel fabricator) where he was undoubtedly influenced by his hobby customising cars and motorbikes, as well as picking up a few skills. As a child Dean rode downhill mountain bikes and later BMX. He says he’s “always had wheels of various kinds” influencing him.
